This study gives an overview of the name “Jesus” and the title “Christ.” It also gives every use in the Greek New Testament of “Christ Jesus” in the original text. These uses show that “Christ Jesus” refers to our risen Lord and what we have as believers in him.
THE NAME JESUS
The name “Jesus” comes from the Hebrew [ הוֹשֵׁעַ] hôshêa‛ [pronounced ho-shay’-ah]. This word means deliverer or savior. Hoshea is the name of five Israelites spelled either Hosea, Hoshea, or Oshea. To this is added the Hebrew word for “Lord” to give Jehoshua [יְהוֹשׁוּעַ transliterated as yehôshûa‛] or [יְהוֹשֻׁעַ transliterated as yehôshûa‛] meaning Jehovah-saved or Jehovah’s deliverer.
We see where “Jehoshua” is first used in the Bible in when Moses changed a name by revelation.
Numbers 13:16:
These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
Oshea was a mighty warrior and deliverer up to that point. But here, his name is changed to show that THE LORD was his true source of strength. It was the Lord God Who delivered His people in the life of a man, Joshua. The same would be true of God’s only-begotten Son. That’s why the angel told both Joseph and Mary to name the child Jesus [Joshua].
Matthew 1:21:
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou [Joseph, Mary’s espoused husband] shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
Luke 1:31:
And, behold, thou [Mary] shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
The name “Jesus” shows that it is God Almighty bringing salvation and deliverance through His Son. Jesus is now Lord over all things, having received that authority from his Father when he was raised and seated at the Father’s right hand in heavenly places.
Philippians 2:9-11:
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
It is through Jesus Christ that we have all of God’s blessings.
1 Corinthians 8:6:
But to us there is but one God, the Father, of [out of] whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by [through] whom are all things, and we [through] by him.
THE TITLE CHRIST
The English word “Christ” is not really a name so much as a title. It is the Greek word meaning “anointed” and corresponds with the Hebrew word translated “Messiah.” The Hebrew word for anoint [מָשַׁח transliterated mâshach, and pronounced maw-shakh’] means to rub with oil. Oil was used to heal, consecrate, ordain, and appoint prophets, priests, and kings. This verb is used 71 times in the Hebrew Old Testament. It specifically prophesies of Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, in Psalm 45.
Psalms 45:6,7:
Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.
Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee [the Messiah] with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
God is ruler over all things. He gave that rulership and authority to the Messiah, His anointed one. Because Jesus “loved righteousness and hated wickedness,” God [Who is Jesus’ God and Father] gave His Son that rulership and authority. Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords.
As it says in Psalm 45:7, Elohim was both the Messiah’s Father and his God. Jesus explained this to Mary Magdalene in his resurrected body.
John 20:17:
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
The Greek word Χριστός [christos, pronounced khris-tos’] also means an anointed one. Like Messiah, it is a title rather than a proper name. We see both the Hebrew and Greek titles clearly used in the gospel of John.
John 1:41:
He [Andrew] first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
So “Christ” is just the word interpreted into Greek for Messiah. The first use of christos in the Greek New Testament is significant. It is the opening truth in the New Testament canon.
Matthew 1:1:
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
The Messiah would fulfill both God’s promise to Abraham and to David. God promised Abraham that all nations would be blessed in Abraham’s “seed” [the Messiah].
Genesis 22:18:
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
God promised David that one of his offspring would be the Messiah.
1 Chronicles 22:10:
He [David’s offspring] shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.
Jesus of Nazareth was the Christ because he was God’s only begotten Son and fulfilled all that God foretold he would be. He was of the line of Abraham and David. Jesus’ mother Mary was a direct descendant of David. Mary provided the egg, the “flesh,” and God provided the life to fertilize that egg. Jesus was of David’s seed “according to the flesh” through Mary. Paul explains this in his epistle to the Romans.
Romans 1:3:
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh.
The Greek New Testament not only opens, but also closes with Jesus Christ.
Revelation 22:21:
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
THE USE OF CHRIST JESUS
The order of words can be very important in communicating truth. That includes Jesus’ name and title. The phrase “Jesus Christ” is used nearly two hundred times in the King James Version of the New Testament. The phrase “Christ Jesus” is used nearly sixty times. A Bible student must remember that we base our understanding of Scriptures on the texts that have been found over the years. Not all texts exactly agree for any given verse of scripture. That is why some places in the King James translated “Jesus Christ” are actually “Christ Jesus” in the Greek text. The following study looks at the places where “Christ Jesus” is used in the Greek New Testament.
In order to understand language, some basic structures must be examined. Nouns are grouped into “cases” that show the function of the noun in a sentence. It can be the subject [nominative case], show a relationship [genitive case], be an indirect object [dative case], or a direct object [accusative case]. Prepositions show a spatial or time relationship with their objects. For example, OVER the house, UNDER the sea. In Greek, certain prepositions can have their objects in one or more of the following cases: genitive, dative, accusative. In general terms, an object of a preposition in the genitive case shows SEPARATION FROM, in the dative case shows AT THE SIDE OF, and the accusative case shows DIRECTION TOWARD. This comes into play when certain Greek prepositions have “Christ Jesus” as their object.
Whereas “Jesus Christ” emphasizes Jesus as God’s deliverer who is anointed to carry out God’s will; “Christ Jesus” often refers to the authority that we have in the risen Messiah who is now Lord over all. The following summary gives an overview of the uses of “Christ Jesus” based on its occurrence in each of the four noun cases. A detailed list of all uses is given after the summary.
SUMMARY OF USES OF CHRIST JESUS
THE NOMINATIVE case shows Jesus as the subject of an action. What does he do? What Christ Jesus does: He came into the world to save sinners. He is the mediator between God and men.
THE GENITIVE case shows a relationship with Christ Jesus. Things “of” Christ Jesus: Servant; prisoner [2X]; things we seek; knowledge; what we are apprehended for; apostle.
Things “from” [Greek preposition apo, which takes a genitive object] Christ Jesus: grace, mercy, and peace [2X];
Things “in the sight of” [Greek preposition enopion, which takes a genitive object] Christ Jesus: giving a charge;
THE DATIVE case shows that we are at rest IN Christ.
What we have “in Christ” [Greek preposition en, which takes a dative object]: redemption; alive to God; gift of God, eternal life; no condemnation; law of spiritual life; the love of God; glorying in godly things; fellow workers; being set apart; grace of God given; made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption; instructors; a “father”; rejoicing [2X]; love for all; liberty [freedom]; blessing of Abraham; children of God by faith; one [body]; faith which worketh by love; a new creation; the faithful; raised up together, and made to sit together in heavenly places; the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us; his created workmanship; made near by the blood of Christ; God’s eternal purpose; glory to God in the church; holy ones [2X]; our rejoicing; being minded; the prize of the high calling of God; guarded hearts and minds; God’s riches in glory; faith [2X]; every man perfect; churches of God which in are Judaea; the will of God; faith and love[2X]; great boldness in the faith; the promise of life; God’s own purpose and grace which was given us; strong in the grace; salvation with eternal glory; living godly; fellow prisoner; God’s eternal glory; peace
What is “to” Christ Jesus [indirect object]: thanks to be enabled with power;
THE ACCUSATIVE case shows Christ Jesus as the direct object of a verb, or the object of a preposition that takes the accusative case.
Christ Jesus as the direct object to the verb is: shown in the scriptures; a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers; whom we preach; received by us; the Apostle and High Priest of our profession
Unto Christ Jesus [Greek preposition eis, which takes an accusative object]: we should believe [2X]; we were baptized
According to Christ Jesus [Greek preposition kata, which takes an accusative object]: be likeminded one toward another
