Background
Psalm 141 is in the Deuteronomy Book of the Psalms (Psalms 107-150). These 44 Psalms, like the Book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament, show God’s Word as the source of salvation, deliverance, and healing. This would be fully carried out in the life of the coming Messiah, the living Word, Jesus Christ. Psalm 141 shows the Messiah’s cry for the Lord’s protection and deliverance, and his trust in the Lord’s salvation.
I’m currently more than half-way in reading Winston Churchill’s A History of the English Speaking Peoples. Throughout European and American history there have been cabals, national movements, secret juntas of the wealthy and powerful, lies and propaganda…and always a steady fabric of Christian believers who prayed and fought the real spiritual fight of believing.
Background
This Psalm has the title “Maschil,” which means instruction. It also has the title: “A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?” This refers to I Samuel 23:19,20: “Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon? Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.”
God delivered David from this attack. The Ziphites tried again in I Samuel 26:1: “And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?” Although Saul sought David, God delivered Saul into David’s hand at that time. Yet David showed Saul mercy and did not kill him.
Background
The title includes “A Psalm of Asaph.” This is the only Psalm with this title in the “Exodus” book of the Psalms (Psalms 42-72). There are 11 Psalms (73-83) with this title in the “Leviticus” book of Psalms (Psalms 73-89). Regarding Asaph, Nehemiah 7:44 speaks of “The singers: the children of Asaph.”
