Anointed with God’s Power

Acts 10:38:
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Throughout the Bible, God had His chosen servants anointed with oil to set them apart for His service. This included prophets, priests, and kings. Jesus was all three. See Jesus Christ: Prophet, Priest, and King for more details.

But Jesus was not anointed with the traditional oil. His anointing was with the holy spirit. At his baptism by John, the spirit appeared like a dove—pure and simple. Isaiah had promised God’s coming savior would be anointed with His spirit in Isaiah 61:1. Jesus quoted that scripture when he opened his ministry in Nazareth.

Luke 4:18:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.

Jesus is called the “Christ,” meaning the anointed one. God anointed His holy child, Jesus.

Acts 4:26,27:
The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord [God Almighty], and against his Christ [anointed one].
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou [God] hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together.

God had the Psalmist prophecy that He would one day anoint His Son (Psalms 45:6,7). Paul later made this truth concerning God’s Son clear in his epistle to the Hebrew believers.

Hebrews 1:8,9:
But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Today, born again believers have “Christ in you” (Colossians 1:27) and God’s spirit dwells in us. It is God Who anoints and seals us with His spirit.

II Corinthians 1:21,22:
Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest [token] of the Spirit in our hearts.

God can show us what we need to know because of that spiritual anointing.

I John 2:20,27:
But ye have an unction [anointing] from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Jesus was anointed with holy spirit power and went about doing good, healing all that were oppressed of the Devil. We can do the same today. He was sent to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. So are we. Let’s boldly go forth and use that anointing to minister and heal others with God’s mighty power through Jesus Christ.

Spectacular! I’ve never worked that or even remember having it put together so succinctly! Thank you! As our daughter and her husband are to be ordained in July, this is especially timely. Many thanks!!
