Rest in Christ

REST. Yesterday, I looked in the concordance in the back of my study Bible at the word “rest.” Many [when you look at the immediate context] have to do with God’s rest in Christ as promised by prophets and fulfilled by His Son.

Genesis 49:15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.

Issachar saw that REST IS GOOD; therefore, he served under tribute to find earthly rest.

Exodus 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

The sabbath was given as a REST; so we don’t work for ourselves but keep it holy to the Lord.

Exodus 33:14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

GOD’S PRESENCE BRINGS REST. Moses asked God to stay with him.

Leviticus 16:31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.

THOSE CLEANSED FROM SIN HAVE REST. Today we are cleansed by the blood of Christ.

Leviticus 25:4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

Every seven years the LAND WAS TO HAVE REST; they were to TRUST GOD TO MEET THEIR NEED.

Deuteronomy 12:10 But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety.

God gives the land as an inheritance; HE GIVES REST IN A SAFE DWELLING. Today we are safe and saved in Christ.

Job 3:17 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.

Sadly, Job longed for the grave where THERE IS “REST” FROM THE AFFAIRS OF LIFE.

Job 11:18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.

Zophar is a RELIGIOUS miserable comforter; he condemns Job for not having a secure and safe rest.

Psalms 55:6 And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

At times we want to fly away like a dove and BE AT REST; God promises to care for the righteous, those who trust in Him.

Psalms 95:11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

GOD’S REST ARE FOR THOSE WHO OBEY.

Psalms 116:7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.

OUR SOUL CAN REST AGAIN BECAUSE OF GOD’S BOUNTY.

Psalms 132:8,14 Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.
This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

GOD’S RESTING PLACE IS HIS PEOPLE THROUGH THE MESSIAH.

Ecclesiastes 2:23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.

THOSE WHO TRY TO DO IT THEMSELVES HAVE NO REST, NOT EVEN IN SLEEP.

Isaiah 11:10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

GOD’S TRUE REST IN JESUS, THE ROOT OF JESSE, WHOM THE NATIONS SEEK, A GLORIOUS REST.

Isaiah 14:7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.

THE WHOLE EARTH IS AT REST AND SINGS WHEN THE ADVERSARY IS DESTROYED.

Isaiah 18:4 For so the LORD said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

LORD’S REST IS IN ZION, THE MESSIAH’S HOME

Isaiah 28:12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS THE REST AND REFRESHING; God’s Word is true, line upon line; BASED ON JESUS, THE PRECIOUS FOUNDATION STONE.

Isaiah 30:15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.

WE CAN RETURN TO REST WHEN WE ARE SAVED; OUR QUIET CONFIDENCE IN CHRIST IS OUR TRUE STRENGTH.

Isaiah 66:1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?

WE AREN’T BIG ENOUGH TO GIVE GOD A RESTING PLACE; heaven is His throne and the earth his footstool.

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

When we WALK IN GOD’S PATHS, WE HAVE REST FOR OUR SOULS.

Ezekiel 38:11 And thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates.

The evil plan to attack those at rest; but God will magnify Himself to the nations.

Micah 2:10 Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction.

THERE IS NO REST FOR THOSE WHO DO EVIL.

Zechariah 1:11 And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

THE EARTH SITS QUIETLY AT REST; GOD DWELLS WITHIN HIS PEOPLE [2:11].

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

TO THE HEAVY LADEN, JESUS IS MEEK AND LOWLY AND GIVES REST TO OUR SOULS.

Matthew 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

When demons are cast out, they seek a place of rest.

Matthew 26:45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

JESUS TOOK ON THE PRESSURE BY HIMSELF; Peter, James, and John sought rest.

John 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

THERE IS REST IN PHYSICAL SLEEP.

Acts 9:31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied.

WHOLE CHURCHES HAD REST BECAUSE OF GOD’S SPIRIT COMFORTING THEM.
