Casting ALL Our Care

I’ve thought about this verse for a number of years.

I Peter 5:7:
Casting all your care upon him [God]; for he careth for you.

When things get tough, I do thank my heavenly Father for His help. I know that Jesus Christ bought my redemption and salvation. I also know I should come boldly to God’s throne of grace.

Recently I realized that I may not believe this verse the way that I could. Do I really believe that God wants me to cast ALL of my cares and worries on His big shoulders? What about the little things that I can take care of with my own smarts and physical ability? Nope. Those too.

Now I’m trying to cast ALL my cares on Him. Then I let Him show me what action to take, if necessary. Often, He handles it without me lifting a finger. I like that way of living, which is how Jesus lived while on earth. We want to ALL WAYS do the will of our loving heavenly Father.

Have you ever purposefully let go of a helium-filled balloon? Up it goes. Do you try to jump and catch it and bring it back to earth? Would you hire a helicopter or airplane to go after it? Would you shoot it down to have it back? Probably not.

Yet many of us will give our concerns to the Father and want to take them back again. These cares are not good. In fact, they “choke” the truth right out of our lives.

Matthew 13:22
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

Mark 4:19:
And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

Luke 8:14:
And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

Jesus said that we should “take heed” to ourselves. We don’t want to be “overcharged” by cares.

Luke 21:34:
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with…cares of this life.

It’s not nice to be “overcharged” in the check-out line. Why should we let life’s cares do the same? We will experience challenges in life. (See this blog for more details.) The Apostle Paul prayed and cared for every believer he could. And he did it every day.

II Corinthians 11:28:
Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

Caring for others is important. Our heavenly Father shows us how to do that. Let’s give ALL our cares to Him, even those that we bear for others. His shoulders are big enough to handle it.

I like that analogy of the helium balloon. Someone shared with me once that if we give our cares to God, it’s like burning them up on a grill…we shouldn’t try to reassemble what has become ashes! Thanks for this wonderful reminder, Gene. All of us try to handle things in our own strength and then bask in pride if we manage it. So much wiser to rely on our Heavenly Father.
