God’s Love for the Individual

IMG_1161

I remember spending countless hours in front of the mirror during my teen years. To me, so much of my life depended on my current hair style, the clothes I wore, or the state of my acne. I was constantly worried about what other people, especially my “friends,” thought of me. And the whole basis for my self-evaluation was my outward appearance.

Pix Gene 4 (6)I also remember during that time trying to know more about God. Books on Zen Buddhism and other Eastern thought were popular in the early 1970s. I vividly recall sitting in the rocking chair in our basement wondering about my destiny. I even tried to read our Jerusalem Bible, but gave up in the genealogies at the beginning of Genesis. I deeply worried about my future. I was taught that if I committed even one mortal sin before death, I was doomed to a fiery eternity in hell. I did not know the Creator as a personal Father. I did not realize how much He knew about me!

Life Lesson #3

Tasha and appleLife Lesson #3: God’s love is what gives me the strength to love myself and others. Over time, responsibilities in life can pile up. The free time once available to take care of personal needs can grow sparse. But even when the pressure is on, God’s people still have needs and God will take care of me as I minister to His chosen.

God, Our Source of All

I remember as a young child wanting to give my Dad and Mom something for their birthdays or at the holidays. I wanted to express my love  in thankfulness for them being such good parents. Often, since I had no money of my own, they would give me what I needed to buy them a present. They appreciated my heart to give back for all they had done for me.

Lowly Heart, Highly Graced

Have you ever met a “self-made” person? I haven’t. Without God, people wouldn’t even have a physical body or be alive. But today it’s all about self-improvement and self-sufficiency and self-help and “selfies.”

Me and my Dad

In the Eastern culture of the Bible, the word “father” is used of someone who begins or supplies something. God, our heavenly Father is the beginner and source of mercy, glory, spiritual ability, and light.

Just Like Your Dad: Nature and Nurture

just like dad 7
Is it me, or my Dad?

I’ve seen pictures of my dad as a boy that look exactly the way I did at that age.  People tell me that they recognize my son from behind because he walks just like me.

Yes, children have the nature of their parents built in, and they also learn to act like them. It’s the same for us as God’s children.  We have our heavenly Father’s loving nature inside, and we can learn to act lovingly like Him.  You can be just like your Dad!

Just Like Your Dad: Our Father’s To Do List

just like dad 3

Since we have God’s love, there are so many ways we can give and serve. So where to begin? Romans 12 has a simple list that shows us how to carry out that logical service to our heavenly Father, Who has poured forth His love into our hearts. Love is at the foundation of our actions.

The Bees in the Rosemary

I went for a walk this morning up a beautifully paved street. I crossed avenues named “Dauntless” and “Exultant” and “Stalwart.” It reminded me of the “ways” that we can walk in when we listen to our heavenly Father—by reading His Word with meekness and using the spiritual connection He gave us through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Moving to a New Home

home10

In our 36 years of married life, Gene and I have moved twenty-three times in ten different locations. In each place, from a small island village to one of the largest cities in the world, we’ve built a place we called home and filled it with our love, our family, our brothers and sisters in Christ, our friends.

How Much Are You Worth?

s20

Gene and I bought a home in Guam, the largest purchase of our married life up to that point. We agreed on a purchase price of $75,000 with the seller of a typhoon-secure, concrete, 900-square-foot house on a third of an acre of land in the village of Talofofo.
