Love and Marriage: Submit

g51In Love and Marriage: As Christ Loved the Church, we saw that God’s plan for marriage as expressed in Ephesians 5:25 tells husbands specifically in the marriage relationship to love their own wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it.

Love and Marriage: As Christ Loved the Church

IMG_20181215_142950572_HDR

We humans are often challenged to love one another and the adversary can often divide us because of our differences in race, nationality, religion, financial status, culture, physical appearance, or intellect. I believe that the biggest hurdle we have to overcome is the difference between the sexes.

Love and Marriage: As Christ Loved Us

I have a favorite saying (although it’s one that I often forget, especially in the heat of battle), “Whoever loves first, wins.” Now before I go any further with this, let me explain the ground rules of this competition. First of all, every Christian believer is to “walk in love” toward one another in the same way that Christ loved all of us.

Love and Marriage: Ephesians 5

wedding3

Have you read any books or manuals on marriage? Talked to a marriage counselor or family therapist? Watched TV shows like Divorce Court or Wife Swap? Asked family or friends for marriage advice? I have done all the above and more. And yes, I learned plenty. But most of it was fluffy self-improvement kind of stuff, sort of like trying to live on a diet of cake and ice cream with some chopped liver thrown in for nourishment. At one point, I decided to get serious and focus on God’s view of the subject in His Word and start eating right.

Love and Marriage: God’s Design

I came of marriageable age in the 1970s when “free love” and “women’s lib” were redefining society’s view of marriage. At the same time, a revival of interest in God, Jesus, and the Bible promoted conflicting viewpoints on the same subject.

In the middle of this tumultuous era, I got married. And only by God’s grace, mercy, and love, we are still married today—36 years later. Having traversed the rocky terrain of popular opinion and made our way across flooding rivers of human passion and emotion, we now have a life together built firmly in sweet fellowship with our heavenly Father that we will cherish the rest of our days.

The Heavens Declare the Glory of God

griffith

As a young girl, my father would take the family to the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. I loved the shows in the planetarium where we could see the “sun” go down and the “stars” come out in the domed ceiling above us. Since then—from Skagway, Alaska to Melbourne, Australia—I think I’ve viewed the entire expanse of the heavens visible to those of us on earth.

Holiday Giving with Simplicity

Gene and I spent our first Christmas Eve together in Melbourne, Australia with several friends. On this warm summer evening at Manya’s apartment, we enjoyed fresh fruit, cold chicken, bread from a local bakery, jasmine tea, and champagne. As we were singing holiday songs, Gene and Terre disappeared for a bit. They returned as…Santa and the Christmas Fairy! Bearing gifts for all!

Is God in Control? Part 4

bev1

Did God the Creator, Lord of heaven and earth, really give man dominion (authority and control) over the earth? Yes! (See Part 1.)

Did that old serpent, the Devil, really deceive Adam and Eve into handing their dominion (authority and control) over to him, effectively making Satan the god of this world? Yes! (See Part 2.)

Is God in Control? Part 1

PC 2

A country wins a military battle. Another area of the world is devastated by an earthquake. Someone wins millions of dollars in the lottery. A student fails a college entrance exam. A driver is injured in a car crash. Too often, well-meaning Christians have an answer for any event, good or bad: “God is in control.” Is that what the Bible really says?

Moving to a New Home

home10

In our 36 years of married life, Gene and I have moved twenty-three times in ten different locations. In each place, from a small island village to one of the largest cities in the world, we’ve built a place we called home and filled it with our love, our family, our brothers and sisters in Christ, our friends.
